The National Parks: America's Best Idea
Filming of Ken Burns' PBS series

PBS

Filming of the new Ken Burns' film at Yosemite National Park.

More than six years in the making, Ken Burns' new film focuses on an uniquely American idea; national parks. Starting in the mid-1800s, with the birth of the conservation movement and the thought of preserving land for the American public, this six part series follows the creation of the parks and the National Park Service to the present day. Beginning September 27, 2009, the series will air on local PBS stations, showcasing the more than 390 Park Service sites and the people whose lives these special places have touched.

Did You Know?
The depth of Crater Lake was first measured in 1886 with a simple sounding machine that consisted of a crank and a spool of piano wire. Those first measurements showed the lake to be 1,996 feet deep - not far off from the depth of 1,943 feet that was measured with high tech equipment in 2000!
