The National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Area is located within Kisatchie National Forest. This area is popular  for various outdoor activities including camping and hunting. State licenses and regulations apply along with additional management preserve permits that are available through the National Forest Service. Seasonal designated camping areas or "hunting camps" are establish in and around the management preserve during permitted gaming seasons. Be careful to observe gun safety and hunting regulations. Fishing and hunting licenses may be purchased at retail outlets or at the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office.

The City of Natchitoches, Louisiana located in the Cane River National Heritage Area is also known throughout the nation as the "City of Lights," because of the annual Christmas Festival which takes place the first Saturday in December.
