The National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Area is located within Kisatchie National Forest. This area is popular  for various outdoor activities including camping and hunting. State licenses and regulations apply along with additional management preserve permits that are available through the National Forest Service. Seasonal designated camping areas or "hunting camps" are establish in and around the management preserve during permitted gaming seasons. Be careful to observe gun safety and hunting regulations. Fishing and hunting licenses may be purchased at retail outlets or at the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office.

Northwestern State University began as the Louisiana Normal School and was the state's first teachers college. It was established in 1884 and the campus' Normal Hill District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
