Procedure

Teacher will pass out symbol picture cards. Talk about the name of each symbol. Tell students, "When I am reading and you hear me say, __________, hold up your card." Teacher reads the poem, American Symbols, by Phyllis Naegeli, prompting students to display the symbols. Ask review questions such as: "Who remembers the name of this symbol?" "I need a good listener to tell me what the poem said about this symbol."
