This tab controls general settings.

View or change the full or display name and description.

• Full Name: Required. Enter a descriptive name for this group of terms and rules.
• Short Name: Required. Limited to 20 characters. Enter the name to display in reports for pages associated with this reporting group.
• Description: Enter text describing the purpose of this reporting group. Limited to 2000 characters.

Use this tab to specify the section, or sections, of your site that the Reporting Group applies to, along with other properties that control rank tracking.

Complete the following fields.

• URL Prefix: A Reporting Group is tied to one or more sections of a site. Use this tab to specify one or more URLs that point to each section of the site, and their corresponding CommonSpot subsite. Note that you must enter fully qualified URL prefixes in order for CommonSpot to match against the search results.

  For smaller sites you may only have one reporting group so you simply have one corresponding record. For example www.paperthin.com would point to the root subsite /

  For larger sites, like a university, a Reporting Group might include multiple subsites. For example, a reporting group that included both Academics and Admissions under would require two entries:

  • www.xyz.edu/academics which points to the /academics subsite, and
  • www.xyz.edu/admissions which points to the /admissions subsite

  Also note that if your site is a single top-level site, but accessed through multiple subdomains your two entries might instead look like this:

  • academics.xyz.edu which points to the /academics subsite, and
  • admissions.xyz.edu which points to the /admissions subsite

  It is important that the URL prefixes match what the search engines return, as CommonSpot uses this prefix URL when inspecting keyword search results to determine which reporting group the page falls into. To add items, enter the fully qualified URL and click the Add button. CommonSpot prompts for a subsite mapping if it can’t determine the mapping automatically. Click the delete icon to remove URLs, or click the subsite search icon to select another subsite to map.

  Note as well that you can only map a subsite to one reporting group. Pages in one subsite cannot be in different reporting groups. By default all child subsites of a specified subsite are included in the reporting group, unless you enter a different, more specific path.

  For example, if you enter these mappings;

  • /support - maps to the Support Reporting group
  • /support/knowledgebase – maps to the KB Reporting Group

  All subsites under /support, except /support/knowledgebase and its children would fall under the Support Reporting Group.

• Max Results to Track: Required. Enter the maximum number of search engine results that CommonSpot should query and report on for a given keyword. The default is 100, meaning that CommonSpot will get the top 100 results for each keyword. Enter a positive value between 1 and 999 that is statistically meaningful for your site.
• Minimum Days Between Queries: Define how often CommonSpot should query search engines for this keyword reporting group. Defaults to 7 days between queries. Note that depending on your API account capacity, it may take one or more days to process all of your keywords. At the time of this writing, Google’s free-tier account allows 100 queries of 10 results per day by default. Under a scenario where you are tracking 30 keywords and you configure CommonSpot to retrieve the top 100 results, it would take 3 days to process all of your keywords. If you used the default value of 7 days, and start the rank tracking on a Monday, it would process 10 keywords on Monday, 10 on Tues and 10 on Wednesday. Then it would restart on the following Monday
• Archive Period: Define how long to keep search ranking history. Defaults to 12 months.
• Minimum Result Position for Score: The same ranking for two different keywords does not bring the same value. A keyword for which you rank first that only gets 100 impressions a month may not be as valuable as ranking fifth for a keyword that gets 2,500 impressions a month. To more accurately present keyword effectiveness, CommonSpot calculates a SEO "Score" based upon rank and impressions. Use this field to define the minimum ranking required for a score to be presented. For example, if you enter the value 10, only keywords for which you ranked in the top 10 results will get a score. Set the lowest ranked result to include in scoring, as described in the dialog. Defaults to 10.

Use this tab to enter your Bing Webmaster API Key, and enable certain features. CommonSpot uses the Bing Webmaster API to provide the following SEO information:

• Estimated Search Impressions
• Keyword Suggestions
• Inbound Link Reporting (a list of pages that link to your page)

For this reason PaperThin recommends that you create a Bing Webmaster Account, an API key, and provide this to CommonSpot through this interface.

Bing Webmaster API Key: Enter the Bing API key for the search engine used for this report. See "Creating a Bing Webmaster API Key" in the PaperThin Knowledgebase (requires login).

Enabled Features

Choose features to add to your reports. CommonSpot can include suggestions for improving keyword rank and identify inbound links.

• Suggestions: CommonSpot uses the Bing Webmaster API to suggest additional related keywords. Check this option to present UI in the SEO Administration Dashboard for viewing suggestions for additional keywords.
• Inbound Link Reporting: Enable inbound link tracking in the SEO Left Pane (see the Contributor's Reference for more information). When checked, CommonSpot uses the Bing Webmaster API to return a list of pages and link text linking to the current page. Note that this operation can be expensive if a large number of pages link to your site.

Use this tab to define the action to take when saving Standard Properties or publishing pages whose metadata/content does not meet your SEO rule criteria. You can make changes required or optional, with or without warnings.

Pick from the dropdown to select an action to take when saving or publishing pages whose Standard Properties do not meet the SEO criteria defined for your site. Possible actions are:

• None - (default) No messaging displays if any rules receive a deficient score.
• Warn - Users receive a warning with a list of all of the SEO rules that scored below the specified deficiency level. CommonSpot displays the rule, its score, and recommendations for improvement. Users can optionally ignore the warning and continue.
• Require - CommonSpot displays a list all of the SEO rules that scored below the specified deficiency level with rule score and recommendations for improvement. Users cannot save or publish without correcting deficient rules.
