Promoting Fire and Life Safety in Lodging Operations
The Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act of 1990 (the Act), PL101-391, was passed in order to save lives and protect property through the promotion of fire and life safety in hotels, motels, and other places of public accommodation. Properties that comply with the fire safety guidelines of PL101-391 are included in the Federal "Fire-Safe List" and other travel directories.
To qualify for the Fire-Safe List, lodging operations must have hard-wired, single-station smoke detectors installed in each guest room and automatic sprinkler systems installed in each area of public accommodation. Not all concession facilities may have this equipment due to historic nature of the facility or other factors.
Concessioners are encouraged to apply to be on the Fire Safe List if they qualify. There is no charge for listing and the easiest way is to register online. If approved, the United States Fire Administration will add the property to the inventory of approved facilities.
