The pedestrian bridge connecting the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center with the historic village of Yorktown has been closed indefinitely after the 32-year old structure showed a deficiency in its steel support beams during an annual inspection on June 12 by engineers from the Federal Highway Administration. Officials said that the deterioration is a result of normal wear and tear on a bridge of that age and design. The Yorktown footbridge has had no structural repair work done since it was built in 1975.

Inspections on the bridge will continue to allow officials to determine the extent of damage and recommend a course of repairs. Although the footbridge is the most direct route pedestrian route between the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center and the village of Yorktown, visitors still have full access to historic town via alternate walking trails, the Yorktown trolley, and parking areas located within the town.

Sidney King painting depicting the harvesting of tobacco crops in 17th century Jamestown

Did You Know?
In 1604, disgusted with his subject’s use of tobacco, King James wrote a scathing commentary entitled A Counterblast to Tobacco. He considered tobacco “hatefull to the nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the lungs.” Yet this golden leaf became the cash crop saving Jamestown from oblivion.
