Thanks to generous grants from the National Park Foundation, the Grand Junction Junior Service League, and Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education, Colorado National Monument has offered transportation scholarships to schools in Mesa County Valley School District 51 for the past several school years.
Since fall 2009, 270 buses have been on scholarship, bringing over 12,000 students to ranger-guided field trips at the monument!

Independence Monument is all that remains of a continuous ridge that once formed a wall between Monument and Wedding Canyons. A cap of durable Kayenta rock has protected this picturesque 450 feet (137 meters) high monolith from the relentless erosion that carried away the surrounding rock.
