February 2008

Commemorate African American History Month as you learn about Clara Barton and the early history of the American Red Cross. A special photographic exhibit highlighting the American Red Cross Sea Islands Relief Efforts of 1893 and 1894 will be shown as part of the house visit.

March 30, 2008 - Sunday

  • 2:00 pm - Special Performance of "Clara Barton Red Cross Angel" by Mary Ann Jung Award winning actress, Mary Ann Jung offers an exciting and personal window on one of history’s most famous women in this solo, interactive performance.
  • Open House between 3:00 and 5:00.

April 26, 2008 - Saturday

Junior Ranger Day and Spring Open House 1:00 - 6:00 pm

In coordination with neighboring Glen Echo Park, Clara Barton National Historic Site will host its annual open house and joint Junior Ranger Day programs.

May and June 2008

A special exhibit highlighting some of the numerous awards and honors Clara Barton received for her service to humanity as well as a selection of various International Red Cross awards.

Jr. Ranger Camps:

  • July 8 - 9, 2008 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • July 15 - 16, 2008 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • July 29 - 30, 2008 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • August 5 - 6, 2008 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Open to campers aged 9 - 12 years old.

Space is Limited; Reservations Required –Call 301-320-1410 for reservations beginning March of 2008.

These two - day camps will make history come alive with fun-filled learning activities related to Clara Barton’s life and times and the unique history of Glen Echo Park. Campers will gain an understanding of the National Park Service mission and the national significance of both sites within the National Park System. Openings are available on a first come, first serve basis. There is no fee to attend the camps.

September 20, 2008 - Saturday

Fall Evening Open House Program 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. 

Join Clara Barton National Historic Site for the Fall Open House.  The lights are turned down low to lend period ambience. Visitors may explore this unique home with its open hallways, hidden closets and “bandage material” ceiling and wall construction. National Park Service park interpreters and volunteers guide visitors through the home sharing stories of Miss Barton’s courage and vision. Learn how Miss Barton used this structure as her home, warehouse, and the first permanent headquarters of the American Red Cross.

Victorian Greeting Card Workshops:

  • November 29 and 30, 2008
  • December 6 and 7, 2008
  • Saturdays or Sundays

Workshops at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm - Reservations are Required and space is limited. Please call 301-320-1410 beginning October 1, 2008 to sign up.

The public is cordially invited to sign up for free workshops on making Victorian era holiday greeting cards. Participants will be photographed in costumes of the period and then use their photograph to make a holiday card in the style Miss Barton sent to her friends. The workshops are open to all ages and children's groups but adult supervision is required. Participants may keep their card. This is a cut and paste activity geared towards families and children.
