Vandever, William

Bio:
In September 1861 Vandever mustered in as colonel of the Ninth Regiment Iowa Infantry, but he never officially resigned his seat in Congress as representative of Iowa. In 1862 he was promoted to brigadier general. In May 1863 he commanded the Union forces at Chalk's Bluff, Arkansas, when he achieved a strategic Union victory by pursuing the Confederates in their withdrawal from Missouri, which forced an end to the Confederate offensive. He was brevetted a major general in 1865.
