Learn about the Ecological History of City of Rocks!

PhD candidate at Utah State University, Lesley Argo-Morris, has produced this in-depth study that describes the changes in vegetation along the California Trail corridor within the Reserve. From approximately 1840 to the present the focus is upon the period of peak pioneer travel (1843-1869). It maps the historic vegetation communities and identifies the most intact remnants for those communities.

Did You Know?
Beginning in 1843, City of Rocks was a landmark for emigrants on the California Trail. At the height of emigration, in 1852, some 52,000 people passed through City of Rocks on the way to California goldfields. Today, City of Rocks National Reserve protects over 6 miles of this historic trail.
