NPS PHOTO

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park uses volunteer bicyclists to assist visitors with information, first aid, and directions. Bike patrollers also educate the public on park regulations and assist in identifying towpath hazards.

Bike patrollers should be physically fit and have excellent communication skills. Please click here to view a more detailed job description of Bike Patrol positions within the park. For additional information, please click on the link below or call C&O Canal Volunteer Coordinator, Danny Filer, at 301-714-2218.

To apply as a volunteer for the bike patrol, please go to current volunteer opportunities and complete the volunteer form or download a bike patrol application and mail it to the volunteer coordinator at the address provided. Thank you for your interest in volunteering.

Did You Know?
Aqueducts are water filled bridges. Aqueducts carried the canal and boat traffic over major waterways, like rivers. Of the 11 aqueducts built along the canal, the Monocacy Aqueduct is the longest at 516 feet, its seven arches constructed mainly of stone quarried from nearby Sugarloaf Mountain.
