Bridge Closed Near Fort Frederick

Bridge over C&OCanal near Fort Frederick closed for repairs

 

 

Hagerstown, Md. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Superintendent Kevin Brandt announced that the bridge across the canal at mile marker 112.4 will be closed soon for necessary repairs. This bridge is located near Fort Frederick State Park. The closure starting December 11, 2006 is not expected to last more than two weeks. The towpath will remain open to the public during construction. Visitor's are asked to observe posted construction signs and exercise caution when using this part of the towpath.

Did You Know?
Canal historians estimate approximately 35,000 laborers helped dig the canal as well as build aqueducts, culverts, locks, lock houses, etc. It took 22 years to build the canal from Georgetown, DC to Cumberland, MD. Much of the workforce were immigrants from Ireland and western Europe.
