Clear Spring, MD. – Due to heavy rains and flash floods a towpath reroute is in effect just below Dam No. 5, mile marker 106, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) in Washington County, Maryland. Maintenance staff reported to the area immediately this morning to stabilize the towpath and start work. The quick response of park staff will allow for an interim bypass to be completed by close of business today. The bypass around the breach will be located adjacent to the canal towpath and will allow visitors to pass the area safely and without having to leave the park. The C&O Canal remains open to park visitors and the towpath is passable in all other areas.

Please be aware that with the heavy rain this week, there may be hazards on the towpath. Although rain has subsided the towpath will remain muddy for days. Please use caution when visiting the park.
