Battle of Shepherdstown Commemoration
C&O Canal NHP will be hosting a unique Living History event in the area around Ferry Hill Plantation and Lock 38 on the C&O Canal on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20, just across the Potomac River from Shepherdstown, WV. This event will not only commemorate the 153rd Anniversary of the Battle of Shepherdstown, but will offer visitors a glimpse into the lives of African Americans at Ferry Hill and working the Canal during the Civil War years. The free event takes place over two days.

Songs of the Canal Era 19th Century Musical Diversions at the Historic Great Falls Tavern
Join us on Saturday June 6, (rain date of Sunday June 7) for the Washington Revels Maritime Voices performance at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. This 19th century musical ensemble will revive songs featuring life on the canals and waterways of 19th-Century America as well as other traditional songs from the time period. The program is outdoors and will be offered at 11:45 and 2:15.

Carderock Picnic Pavilion and Marsden Tract Group Campsite Reservations Go Online
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park has transitioned to an online reservation system for its two group recreation fee sites in Montgomery County, Maryland: the Carderock Picnic Pavilion and Marsden Tract Group Campground. The new reservation system will simplify the process for groups who will now be able to instantly access calendars to check availability and access detailed information about the facilities.

National Park Service Seeks Public Comments on Invasive Plant Management Plan for 15 National Capital Region Parks
Washington – The National Park Service (NPS) is accepting public scoping comments on an Invasive Plant Management Plan and Environmental Assessment (plan/EA) for 15 national parks in the greater Washington DC region. The plan/EA will identify long-term strategies to reduce impacts and threats from invasive plants, and will provide opportunities for restoring native plant communities and historic landscapes. Comments are being accepted through June 10, 2015 and can be submitted online.

Towpath Repair and Resurfacing Mile Post 74 - 76
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park announces the award for towpath repairs between Mile Marker 74 – 76, just above Lock 38 to Snyders Landing Boat Ramp. This work will start approximately the 11th of May. The total construction period will run approximately 2 months. The towpath will remain open to visitors with only minor (5 to 10 minute) delays expected.

Washington DC Area National Parks Join Find Your Park Movement
National capital region parks join national parks, programs and partners across the country to encourage everyone to find their park and share their stories online at FindYourPark.com. C and O Canal NHP Revises Fee Proposal
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) is revising its proposal to increase and expand entrance and other fees park-wide. Last month the park proposed expanding fee collection to include charging a park-wide recreation fee. At this point, we’re midway through robust public meetings. Having heard concerns over the proposal for new fees, the park has decided to rescind its proposal to expand fee collection.

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) has changed the venue for the Glen Echo, Maryland public meeting for February 5, 2015 to the Washington Waldorf School, 4800 Sangamore Road, Bethesda, MD from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. The venue for the Shepherdstown, West Virginia public meeting for February 11, 2015 has been changed to the Storer Ballroom at the Shepherd University Student Center, 210 North King Street, Shepherdstown, WV, from 6:30-8:00 PM. Both meetings will discuss the park’s proposal to increase and expand entrance and other fees park-wide. Interested citizens are invited to discuss the proposed fee increases at this public meeting.

Winter Programs at the C and O Canal in Great Falls Maryland
Join Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park rangers and volunteers at the Historic Great Falls Tavern for interpretive programs and activities during the winter season. Until March 29, 2015, visitors can participate in a Ranger’s Choice Program starting at 2:00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Example of program topics include exploring 19th century life at Great Falls, taking a hike with a ranger, discovering the diversity of nature or participating in a lock demonstration. Please call ahead to confirm programs in the event of inclement weather. There is an entrance fee to the park of $5.00 per single vehicle. Programs are free of charge.

The National Park Service (NPS), is accepting public scoping comments through Feb. 19 on preliminary alternatives for the Georgetown Non-motorized Boathouse Zone Development Plan and Environmental Assessment (Plan/EA). The NPS will hold a public meeting on Feb. 4 to discuss the project, which will study options for levels of development and services to support non-motorized water and recreational use along the Georgetown Waterfront.

Fees collected at the park are critical to the park's operation, and 100%of the fees collected at the C&O Canal are invested in park projects that improve facilities and experiences for park visitors.

National Park Service and Outdoor Foundation Select C and O Canal Association as 2014 Challenge Cost Share Program Recipient
Today the National Park Service and the Outdoor Foundation announced recipients of the 2014 Challenge Cost Share Program, which supports projects that promote urban outreach, youth engagement and connecting people to the outdoors. The partners selected 20 projects, from 187 applications, and will award nearly $400,000 that will be matched by an additional $885,000 in direct and in-kind contributions from recipients. A total of 14,000 youth are expected to be engaged through the program.

C and O Canal Hiring Local Educators at Great Falls in Potomac MD
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) seeks local educators to assist with delivery of new park education programs in Montgomery County, Maryland. The C&O Canal Trust, the park’s official non-profit partner, will offer a daily stipend to educators. A training workshop will be held for new recruits in February 2015 at the C&O Canal Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. Educators will work side-by-side with park staff to deliver outdoor education programs along the historic canal towpath and the Potomac Gorge area.

Holiday Music at the Great Falls Tavern
Come and join in the festive mood of the holiday season at the Great Falls Tavern in the C&O Canal National Historical Park. On Sunday, December 7th at 1:00 pm, join the Gilmore’s Light Ensemble as they perform 19th century holiday music and carols at the Great Falls Tavern. The Gilmore’s Light Ensemble plays and sings traditional 19th century music using hammered dulcimer, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and accordion wearing clothing of the mid-1800’s. The concert lasts from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm and is free. Light refreshments will be served. There is an entrance fee to the park of $5.00 per single vehicle.

Towpath Restoration at Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
CABIN JOHN, MD – The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park will be conducting towpath repairs from mile marker 5 (Lock 5) to mile marker 7 (Lock 7). Repairs include fixing eroded towpath areas, as well as resurfacing of the towpath. Work will take place during the hours of 6:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M, Monday through Friday. Visitors can expect delays in this area of up to 15 minutes and are urged to use caution while visiting this area of the park. Repairs are expected to begin October 14, 2014 and take approximately 6 weeks.
