Ferry Hill Plantation in Sharpsburg, Maryland Hosts Events on July 18 and July 25

Sharpsburg, MD –The Chesapeake &Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal NHP) announces Ferry Hill Plantation House (Ferry Hill Place) in Sharpsburg will be hosting events on Saturday, July 18, 2015 and Saturday, July 25, 2015, in conjunction with the upcoming National Park Service Centennial.

 

On Saturday, July 18, 2015, at 10:30am and 12:30pm, rangers will lead a bike tour on the C&O Canal from Ferry Hill to Packhorse Ford, about 2.5 miles round trip. Visitors are invited to bring a bike and join the tour. In addition, there will be half-hour interpretive tours of the Ferry Hill Plantation House at 11:30am and 1:30pm.

 

On Saturday July 25, 2015, join us at Ferry Hill for an afternoon of bluegrass music by the Lonesome Fiddle Ramblers, performing from 12pm-3pm. This free event will feature great music with an impressive view of Shepherdstown and the Potomac River. Visitors are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and a picnic lunch to enjoy the show.

"At this midpoint along the C&O Canal, Ferry Hill Place has been home to generations. Their stories are showcased in this impressive home overlooking the Canal and the Potomac River," said Park Ranger Kelly Fox. "We are excited this location allows visitors an opportunity to experience history, relax, recreate and enjoy this wonderful resource."

 

All events are open to the public. Special activities for children will be available in Ferry Hill Plantation House. Ferry Hill also hosts a Bike Loaner Program which allows visitors who are interested in exploring the C&O Canal to be able to borrow a bike FREE of charge for 1 -2 hour period.

 

Ferry Hill Plantation is the former home of Henry Kyd Douglas, one of the youngest members of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's staff. Today, the site welcomes visitors with historical tours and a spectacular view of the surrounding area from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend on Friday,Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00am3:00pm. For more information, contact the Williamsport C&O Canal NHP Visitor Center at 301-582-0813.
