Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
Bridging the Watershed

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is an active supporter and participant in the Briding the Watershed program. Bridging the Watershed was developed by the Alice Ferguson Foundation in partnership with the national park service and area schools to promote education programs about the Potomac River and its tributaries. Parks are used as living classrooms and children are involved in interactive ranger led programs about the Potomac Watershed. Please contact the park visitor centers for more information.

Photo canal boat exiting lock 20.

Did You Know?
Most freight boats on the C&O Canal were approximately 95 feet long and 14.5 feet wide while most locks were 100 feet long and 15 feet wide. This left boat captains little margin for error as they steered their boats into the locks, trying to avoid the $5.00 fine for damaging lock masonry.
