The park's islands, Santa Rosa Island in particular, are an important wintering area and stopover point for shorebirds. Thirty shorebird species have recorded. Common wintering shorebirds include willet (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus), wandering tattler (Heteroscelus incanus), whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), black turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala), and sanderling (Calidris alba).
