The summer season is off to a safe start on the Lake of the Arbuckles and Chickasaw National Recreation Area
The recently past Memorial Day weekend holiday was a safe and successful one for park visitors and staff at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. To assist in making the remainder of the summer safe and enjoyable, the National Park Service is reminding visitors to keep safety in mind while visiting the park.

Spring rains bring a return of the Freshwater Springs

Celebrate Spring by Picking Up the Platt Historic District
Chickasaw National Recreation Area is seeking local volunteers to roll up their sleeves and devote one morning to cleaning up the Platt Historic District.   Interested volunteers can meet at 9 am on April 25, 2009 at the Lincoln Bridge parking area, just off of U. S. Highway 177 south of Sulphur.

Business Opportunities at Chickasaw NRA
Chickasaw National Recreation area is offering a unique opportunity to develop a partnership with a high visitation National Park Service site located in Sulphur, Oklahoma.  The park is seeking proposals for three business ventures to support visitor services in the areas of fire wood sales, motorized and non-motorized boat rentals and food services.

Upper Guy Sandy boat ramp closed due to low water conditions
The boat dock and launch ramp is closed at the Upper Guy Sandy boat launch area due to low water levels on the Lake of the Arbuckles. This temporary closure is expected to last until water levels on the lake rise enough to allow safe operation of the dock and launch ramp.

Low flow conditions at Antelope Springs and Travertine Creek
Due to extended dry weather and other influences, the Antelope Springs in the Platt Historic District have ceased to flow. Some water is still flowing in the area of Buffalo Springs. Low amounts of water are currently flowing throughout Travertine Creek downstream from both Buffalo and Antelope Springs.

Buffalo Springs Comfort Station rehabilitation continues at Chickasaw National Recreation Area
National Supply and Installation has been selected to complete the Slip Line Sanitary Sewer Project at the Buffalo Springs Comfort Station.  The contractor will be working along the existing trail that stretches from the Travertine Nature Center to the Buffalo Springs Comfort station. The trail may be closed for brief periods while the contractor is working close to the trail. The public is asked to exercise caution around stored materials or equipment using the trail.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area Seeks Volunteers for Trails & Rails Program Aboard Heartland Flyer
Chickasaw National Recreation Area is seeking outgoing, friendly volunteers for the Trails & Rails Program on Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer. Volunteers will serve as ambassadors for the National Park Service and Chickasaw National Recreation Area aboard the Heartland Flyer. After boarding the train in Norman, Oklahoma, volunteers will present an interpretive program about the natural and cultural resources of Oklahoma between the Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and Ardmore, Oklahoma stations. Volunteers will then continue on the train to Fort Worth, Texas, returning to Norman the same day.

Bald Eagle Watch 2009
This year park rangers at Chickasaw National Recreation Area would like to invite the public to attend Bald Eagle Watches scheduled for Saturday, January 24 and 31, 2009. The day will begin at 9:00 am with a program at the Travertine Nature Center. After the program the group will caravan with park rangers to Lake of the Arbuckles to locate and observe eagles in the wild.

New hours for the New Year at the Travertine Nature Center
Beginning on Friday, January 9, 2009 the Travertine Nature Center will adopt new operating hours of 9:00 am to 4:30 pm daily Labor Day to Memorial Day and 9:00 am to 5:30 pm daily Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day. Travertine Nature Center will be closed Monday, January 5, 2009 through Thursday, January 8, 2009, to conduct annual cleaning and maintenance on the exhibits and facilities inside the Travertine Nature Center.

The City of Sulphur and the National Park Service Announce a Partnership to Facilitate Long-term Water Resource Planning in South Central Oklahoma
The City of Sulphur announced today that the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program (Rivers & Trails) of the National Park Service will work with the City, Chickasaw National Recreation Area, the Chickasaw Nation, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Arbuckle Master Conservancy District, local rural water districts and other stakeholders to facilitate a planning effort to address long-term water resource issues in the region.

Tim Jarrell to serve as acting superintendent at the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site
Tim Jarrell has accepted a temporary assignment as acting Superintendent at Washita Battlefield National Historic Site.  Mr. Jarrell will begin his acting duties at Washita Battlefield on November 9, 2008 and serve until a permanent Superintendent is selected.

Candlelight Tour a success at Chickasaw National Recreation Area
On Saturday, October 18th, staff and volunteers at Chickasaw National Recreation Area presented the story of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Platt National Park [the present day Platt Historic District] in a candlelight tour setting. Over 450 visitors were escorted through a series of twelve vignettes that explored the experience of the CCC.

Hazardous Fuels reduction at Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Chickasaw National Recreation Area is continuing with fuel reduction projects throughout the park. The areas of treatment include the boundary along the west side of the Lake of the Arbuckles, Guy Sandy, East Hunting Area, and the Historic Platt District.

Gail McCurry Retires from Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Gail McCurry, Chief of Administration, retired recently from Chickasaw National Recreation Area after 36 years of service. Superintendent Bruce Noble welcomes the community to say thanks and farewell to Gail McCurry at an afternoon open house scheduled from 2:00 – 4:00PM on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Sulphur Chamber of Commerce located at 717 W. Broadway.

Historic Candlelight Tour at Chickasaw National Recreation Area
The public is invited to learn how a previous generation confronted their own economic challenges during this year’s Historic Candlelight Tour scheduled for October 18, 2008.  The tour will focus on the story of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Company 808 and their experiences in Platt National Park [today’s Platt Historic District]. This is the third event the park has held to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the CCC.

Bromide Hill Trail Closure
Beginning September 5th and extending through the end of September, the switchback portion of the Bromide Hill Trail will be closed to public use for trail maintenance. A four man National Park Service crew from Bandelier National Monument will construct a 25 foot long and 5 foot high stone masonry wall to support a wall that has been undercut by water erosion.

Oklahoma's National Parks at the Oklahoma State Fair
Oklahoma’s national parks will staff a National Park Service (NPS) booth at the 2008 Oklahoma State Fair, which runs from September 11 through September 21. Park rangers from the state’s three national park areas [the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Oklahoma City National Memorial and the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site] will staff the booth and provide information about national park sites and programs.

Repair Hillside Spring in Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Superintendent Bruce Noble of Chickasaw National Recreation Area announced today that a project to repair the Hillside Spring masonry structure will begin Monday, February 11, 2008.  The historic preservation crew from Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico, and park staff will be working on the project over the next two months.

Prescribed Fires Planned At Chickasaw National Recreation Area
As part of the on-going prescribed fire program at Chickasaw National Recreation Area, National Park Service fire managers will be implementing prescribed fires within the recreation area during the next two months, as weather conditions allow.  The areas targeted are the West Hunting Area and Arbuckle Dam for the gradual and safe introduction of fire to areas that have recently been treated with mechanical fuel reduction.
