Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Black Sulphur Springs

A group of four sulphur springs that bubbled up through the sandy beaches of Rock Creek today is known as Black Sulphur Springs. Since the park’s creation, this area has been used for sunbathing, wading, swimming, and picnicking. In the 1920s, the small area west of the present parking lot was fenced-in to contain a small elk herd. It now serves as a picnic area.

Black Sulphur Springs was originally located on the cliffside of the Buffalo Pasture Trail. The springs dried up and people began to call this area Black Sulphur Springs.
