Special 2007 Equinox Events:


Friday September 21

Ranger led tours of Pueblo Bonito (10am & 2pm): 

Join park staff at 10am and 2pm for a special tour through Pueblo Bonito. Meet at Pueblo Bonito parking lot.

Evening Talk (8:00pm): Archaeoastronomy at Chaco Canyon

Join Park Ranger GB Cornucopia at 8:00pm at the Visitor Center Amphitheater for a special talk about the archaeoastronomy of the canyon.

Night Sky Program (9:00pm): Immediately following GB’s presentation, join our staff at the astronomy observatory (behind the visitor center) for the Night Sky Program.

 

Saturday September 22

Talk (6:30 am): Sunrise at Casa Rinconada

Join Park Ranger GB Cornucopia at 6:30am at Casa Rinconada to observe the equinox sunrise and for a talk about alignments in the great kiva. Park gates will be open at 6:00am.

Hike (8:30am): Shabik’eshchee Village Hike

Join Park Ranger Matt LeDuc at 8:30am at Visitor Center for a special hike to a Basketmaker III village that pre-dates the Chacoan buildings, along with Pueblo and Navajo petroglyph sites. This hike is limited to 15 people and visitors must register in advance. Call (505-786-7014 ext 221) or stop by the Visitor Center to sign up. Visitors are encouraged to carpool. The hike will be 1 ½ miles in length, or 7 miles in length if roads are impassable.

Join author and National Park Service Education Specialist Stephen Alten Brown for a book signing, and chat with him about his new book “Shadows of Chaco Canyon,” at the Visitor Center.

Evening Talk (8:00): Shadows of Chaco Canyon

Join Author and National park Service Education Specialist Stephen Alten Brown for a discussion of his new book “Shadows of Chaco Canyon,” a work of fiction set in Chaco Canyon during its time as a center of ceremony, trade, and administration. Presented at the Visitor Center Amphitheater.

Did You Know?
Many buildings got the names you see at the park today during an exploration under Lieutenant James Simpson in 1849. Simpson recorded the names given to him by one of his guides, Carravahal. They have linguistic origins in Spanish, Navajo, and Hopi.
