The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area announces that damage assessment teams have been surveying the trails, bridges, and other improvements for damage from the recent rains and flooding. As a result several land units have been reopened for visitor use. Visitors must keep in mind that they will not find the park in the same condition that it was before the rains. Many trees are down on the trails. Trails in low lying areas are extremely muddy and have been washed away at some locations. Several parking lots and boat ramps are still covered with mud. Even though a unit may be open, visitors are encouraged to use extreme caution and obey area closures within the unit when visiting.
Bowmans Island, Settles Bridge, Abbotts Bridge, Medlock, Jones Bridge, Island Ford, and Gold Branch units are open. The Vickery Creek unit is open, however the parking lot off of Riverside Drive remains closed. The boat ramp and trails north of Johnson Ferry remain closed at the Johnson Ferry unit. At Cochran Shoals the Interstate North parking lot remains closed as well as the trails and landing at Powers Island. The Columns Drive, Sope Creek, Powers Island parking lots and remaining trails, including the 2-mile fitness loop trail, at Cochran Shoals are now open. While the Whitewater Creek and Paces Mill parking lots and boat landings remain closed, the remainder of the Palisades, including the Indian Trail and Akers Drive parking lots is open.
The Chattahoochee River has been re-opened south of Holcomb Bridge. Due to bacteria levels, park officials advise that you avoid contact with the water. All boat landings and boat ramps below Morgan Falls Park are still closed as a result of heavy siltation. |
