The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area has reopened the Abbotts Bridge Unit, as of October 24, 2003.  Abbotts was closed on May 19, 2003 due to a bridge failure.  Heavy rainstorms caused a tributary stream of the Chattahoochee River to overflow and undercut the entrance roadway.  The serious erosion undercut two stream culverts, which caused the roadway to collapse.

The Federal Highway Administration worked with the park to restore access to the area as quickly as possible.
