Wheeling Suspension Bridge This is the oldest major long-span suspension bridge in the world, with a span of more than 1,000 feet. It was completed in 1849 to carry the National Road over the Ohio River. The bridge was designed by Charles Ellet, Jr. and rebuilt after an 1854 collapse by William McComas. This bridge is possibly the Nation's most significant extant ante-bellum engineering structure. Its construction established American leadership in the building of suspension bridges and the bridge continues to carry traffic today.
