Best Archeological Image - Poplar Forest
Best Archeological Image: Shrubs set out in locations found through archeological investigation
In vicinity of Lynchburg, Virginia
Photographer: Travis McDonald,
Director of Architectural Restoration
Poplar Forest: Completed in 1819, this one story, octagonal-shaped brick structure was built by Thomas Jefferson as a country retreat. Jefferson once described it as "the best dwelling house in the state, except for Monticello," but better proportioned to the needs of a private citizen. Gutted by fire in 1845, it is in the process of being substantially restored by the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest.

Also see Honorable Mention for Work-In-Progress Image for another Poplar Forest photograph.
