The National Park Service staff is pleased to share with you more of the photos received in the first National Historic Landmarks photo contest. These Honorable Mentions were down-to-the-wire rivals of those judged best in the individual categories. Our photo contest judges were far from unanimous in their choices; you are sure to find some of your personal favorites among these as well.

Enjoy. We certainly have.

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS: The National Park Service especially recognizes the following Landmark Stewards for their creativity in helping make this First Photo Contest such a resounding success.

Salmon P. Chase Birthplace & Boyhood Home, New Hampshire: Barbara Lewis and Ted Doyle, Stewards of Chase House, sent an entire photo album, full of images of their NHL that they now open to the public as a Bed and Breakfast. See two images from the album, these of a special guest enjoying the amenities of the grounds. This NHL was home to Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873,) who served Ohio in the U.S. Senate and as governor of the state. Chase later served our Nation as Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, presiding over the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson. Chase is especially noted for having held high ranking positions in all three branches of government.

Georgian Court, New Jersey: Stewards of Georgian Court (Georgian Court College) submitted a CD-ROM, complete with an information-filled webpage, highlighted by 39 images from their NHL. See the Best Landscape and Honorable Mention Seasons Change categories for photos from this CD-ROM.

Poplar Forest, Virginia and Wheeling Suspension Bridge,
West Virginia:
These Stewards are recogized for their submissions which included extensive photo documentation of their respective sites. See the Best Archeological Image and Honorable Mention Work-in-Progress for photos and a description of Poplar Forest. See the Best Structure category for an image and description of Wheeling Suspension Bridge.

New York Botanical Gardens, New York: We received four seperate submissions from staff and volunteers at the New York Botanical Gardens due to this NHLs wide-spread notification of the contest and the Stewards' enthusiastic interest in participating. See Best Historic Dress Image , Best Effect Image, and Honorable Mention Landscape for photos and a description of New York Botanical Gardens.

Grey Towers, Pennsylvania: This NHL chose to hold its own photo contest for its students and staff to draw attention to its National Historic Landmark, Grey Towers, the focal point of Beaver College. See Best Institutional Site Image for one of the photographs submitted to our contest.
