Twentieth Century Sculpture:
Preserving Art of the Recent Past

As modern heritage becomes a more recognized component of historic preservation, professionals are confronted with unique challenges and opportunities. The Preserving the Recent Past II Conference, to be held in Philadelphia at the historic PSFS Building (Loews Hotel), October 11-13, 2000, will be a timely and important international forum for examining state-of-the-art preservation methods for properties from the modern era.

In addition to the three-day Conference agenda, there will be special activities and collaborative programs, one of which is a two-day technical workshop on Twentieth Century Sculpture: Preserving Art of the Recent Past, on October 9-10. This workshop will focus on issues related specifically to twentieth century sculpture, including the characteristics and behavior of the materials employed in their creation; the techniques used to investigate their condition; conservation treatments; collections care; conservation and the artist's intent; and the role of conservation in commissioning new sculpture. Outdoor sculpture Outdoor public monuments, as well as sculpture housed in museums and private collections, will be discussed. The workshop concludes with a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to view the modern sculpture galleries and the conservation laboratory.
