National Park Service Places: What's Happening

                  SUMMARY: ARCHEOLOGICAL MONITORING

Archeological monitoring of the installation of a new steam line to the Graff House at Independence National Historic Park revealed the presence of an intact stratum dating to the middle of the eighteenth century beneath the existing sidewalk. Artifacts recovered from this stratum suggest that the stratum represents a midden deposit from domestic occupations at the site prior to the building of the Graff House. Although this stratum contains archeological information, its limited extent (less than 5 feet wide by 10 feet long) makes it ineligible for inclusion as a contributing resource to the National Register significance of the park. The stratum is archeologically important because it suggests the presence of similar intact strata beneath other sidewalks within the park.
