Jay Gould Estate: Jay Gould's estate, also known as Lyndhurst, is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival Architecture in the nation. Lyndhurst was one of the first of A. J. Davis' designs in the style that became known as "Hudson River Gothic." Davis originally designed the sturcture, which is brick clad in marble, in 1838 for William Paulding, former mayor of New York. Davis designed enlargements for Lyndhurst in 1880 for its new owner, Gould. Gould was a freewheeling financier notable even in the era of unrestrained capitalism after the Civil War. Gould's daughter bequeathed the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1961, and it is now open to the public.
Also see Best Landscapes and Honorable Mention for Seasons Change for images from Jay's son George's estate, Georgian Court.
