Brook Farm: This Utopian community was founded in 1841 as the Brook Farm Institute for Agriculture and Education to promote New England Transcendentalists' ideal of "plain living and high thinking." Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne were among the many literary notables associated with Brook Farm. The community closed in 1847 and no buildings from the Transcendentalist period remain. |
