New York Botanical Gardens: Established in 1896, this is one of the leading botanical gardens in the world, with extensive research and education programs. Its 230 acres includes one of the world's largest herbariums, an extensive botanical library and museum, a 40-acre virgin hemlock forest, and a Victorian-era glass conservatory.
