Boston Athenaeum: This is the largest of the Nation's early proprietary libraries. Their treasures include items from the libraries of George Washington and John Quincy Adams, confederate imprints and early pamphlets of historical value. Privately founded and funded in 1807, the Boston Athenaeum remains one of the premier research institutions for scholars of American history.
