Becuna: An example of the standard Fleet type BALAO class submarines
which could operate at a test depth of 400 feet, BECUNA was commissioned in 1944 and served
in World War II as the Submarine Flagship of the Pacific Fleet under
the command of General Douglas MacArthur. She is credited with sinking
3888 tons of Japanese shipping and received four battle stars for her World War II service. The Becuna is now docked in the Delaware River, next to another NHL vessel, the Olympia. Both vessels are open to visitors through the Independence Seaport Museum. |
