NPS Celebrates Carter G. Woodson
WASHINGTON – Celebrate the 139th birthday of the “Father of Black History”, Carter G. Woodson, with the National Park Service (NPS), Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH), and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. by. Join us for a special program and music onFriday, December 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.mat Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 1500 9th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001.
The program features remarks from Superintendent Gopaul Noojibail, former NPS Director Robert “Bob” Stanton, and Sylvia Cyrus, executive director of ASALH. The keynote speaker is David Marion, First Vice Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The Omega Corral will also perform musical selections. After the program, ASALH will host a reception in the Fellowship Hall of Shiloh Baptist Church from8 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
Woodson was instrumental in establishing African American history as an academic discipline and is best known for establishing Negro History Week in 1926, now recognized as African American History Month or Black History Month. Prior to his work there was very little accurate written history about the lives and experiences of Americans of African descent. In 1915, Woodson, a historian trained at Harvard and a D.C. public school teacher, founded the Association for the Study of Life and History, now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
