CARLSBAD, New Mexico – Carlsbad Caverns National Park is under a Stage I Fire Restriction due to high temperatures, low relative humidity, and extremely dry vegetation. Stage I fire restrictions include:

·        No open flames, campfires, charcoal, gas or wood barbecues allowed in the park (to include Rattlesnake Springs Picnic Area).

·        Smoking is allowed only within an enclosed vehicle or building. Cigarette butts must be disposed of in your vehicle ashtray or in receptacles only.

·        Do not park vehicles on dry grass or vegetation that could ignite.

·        Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Fires can start easily and spread quickly. Please report any fires or smoke to 911 or park staff immediately.

Acting superintendent, Doug Neighbor, reminds visitors "Weather forecasts are predicting very hot temperatures and extremely dry conditions, the perfect combination for an easy start to a wildfire. Please stay safe and help us protect the park and surrounding areas."

The park remains open under regular summer hours (visitor center 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.). For more information about Carlsbad Caverns hours, cave tours and other activities, call 575-785-2232 or visit www.nps.gov/cave.
