Sister National Parks Share a Movie That Started it All

Carlsbad, New Mexico and Salt Flats, Texas – To commemorate Earth Day (April 22) and National Park Week (April 19-26) the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center, Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Carlsbad Caverns National Park invite everyone for a presentation of a Ken Burns' documentary, "Yosemite – A Gathering of Spirit," on Saturday, April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center, 481 West Fox Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220, 575/887-0276.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Yosemite Grant Act signed by President Abraham Lincoln, thereby protecting Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove, now part of Yosemite National Park. These were the first resources in the world set aside for preservation – planting the seed for the national park idea, which later led to the establishment of Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks.

The Ken Burns' documentary tells the story of the Yosemite Grant Act. Visionary Americans like Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir and Galen Clark understood that the wonders of the American wilderness are not only our inheritance, but our responsibility. The promise of the Yosemite Grant endures as the National Park Service opens its arms to 279 million people annually who marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty and gain an understanding of the importance of preserving our wild lands, pre-historic and historic heritage.

The 30-minute documentary will be introduced by Guadalupe Mountains National Park superintendent, Dennis Vásquez.
