Registration Open for ParKids and Teen Week at Carlsbad Caverns

CARLSBAD, New Mexico – Two popular summer youth programs at Carlsbad Caverns National Park are now accepting application; the ParKids one-week day camps for each of the first three weeks in June and Teen Adventure Week at the end of the month.

ParKids Camps, now in their 15th year, uses hands-on activities (such as making rain sticks and dream catchers and creating fossils out of plaster), field trips, and presentations as fun ways to learn about national parks and natural resources in the Carlsbad area. This summer's three, week-long camps are by age group. ParKids Camp 1, June 3-7, for children entering the second and third grades in the next school year. ParKids Camp 2, June 10-14, for incoming fourth and fifth graders. ParKids Camp 3, June 17-21, for fifth, sixth and seventh graders. Children who participate should be in good physical condition, self-disciplined and have positive attitudes.

The last week of June is reserved for Teen Adventure Week, June 24-28, which offers teens going into the eighth, ninth and 10th grades an adventurous and educational week filled with hiking, camping and off trail caving in addition to developing their skills in the principles of Leave No Trace outdoor ethics. Teens who complete the week receive a certification in the seven Leave No Trace principles.

"The response in recent years has been so great, we are excited to hold this program again," said park Education Specialist Helen Fields. "We tailor these activities and field trips to the different grade levels for maximum educational value and maximum fun for the kids."

Registration fee for each of the camps is $50. Please register in person at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park administrative office at 3225 National Parks Highway. (Email and faxed registrations are not accepted.) Registration deadline is Wednesday, May 15. Transportation for both ParKids and Teen Adventure Week participants is provided between the park administrative office and each day's activity site.
