Contact: Helen Fields Contact: Paula Bauer During a two and a half day workshop this weekend, Carlsbad Caverns National Park's Education Specialist Helen Fields will be coordinating training and special tours of local parks for teachers from Juarez, Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and Carlsbad, New Mexico. The objectives of the international workshop are to provide cross-cultural communication and promote stewardship and educational opportunities in the area's state and national parks and national forest. The eight teachers will visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Living Desert Zoo and Garden State Park, Lincoln National Forest, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Employees at each location will present special programs which encourage the educators to discover and investigate natural cultural resources on public lands and will highlight the Chihuahuan Desert, common to all participants. "Throughout the workshop, the teachers will take part in educational activities that can easily be adapted to any classroom," explains Education Specialist Helen Fields. "We hope the teachers will have a great time visiting and learning about our area as well as make lasting contacts with other teachers." At the end of the workshop, participants will receive a Carlsbad Caverns National Park curriculum guide, educational brochures, and materials. All educators will find the curriculum guide and educational brochures under the "For Teachers" tab on the park's website: www.nps.gov/cave. The website also contains a complete list of cave tours and other programs. |
