2008 Schedule Of Special Events              40th Anniversary Celebration

May 26
Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This event honors Carl Sandburg’s collection of folk songs found in The American Songbag, and his perpetuation of traditional folk music in America. Live performances will include folk musicians, demonstrations, poetry and dancing.

10:00 Jhon Akers plays classical guitar and shares Sandburg’s poetry
11:00 Jon Shain performs traditional acoustic and blues tunes
12:00 Carawan Family Band performs traditional folk music
1:00 Buddy Davis Band plays string band music
2:00 - 4:00 Chuck Beattie Band performs traditional Chicago-styled blues
1:00 – 3:00 Steve and Jean Smith perform dulcimer music in the barn area

In the Bookstore, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
· BJ Condrey will display her custom made Connemara note cards.
· Author Galen Reuther will be signing her Images of America books: Connemara, Flat Rock and Hendersonville.
· Special goat milk products will be available from Pyrwood Dairy.

Supported by the National Park Service, Eastern National, Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara, and a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and Henderson County, awarded through the Arts Council of Henderson County.


June 7

Historic Connemara Walking Tours
Four hour-long tours are offered starting at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Learn about the early history of Connemara before the Sandburg family moved in. The free tours are limited to 20 persons, first come.

June 18 through August 16
Flat Rock Playhouse Vagabond School of the Drama Performances

Wednesday through Saturday at 10:15 a.m.
Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories and The World of Carl Sandburg.
No performances July 16-19.

September 27
A Celebration of Lincoln
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This event celebrates Carl Sandburg’s Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Abraham Lincoln and the February 12, 2009 200th birthday of Lincoln. Featured performances include a reading of Sandburg's speech before Congress during Lincoln's 150th birthday celebration, music of Lincoln's day, and an Abraham Lincoln portrayal.

October 17
40th Anniversary Celebration Events
Carl Sandburg Home was legislated by Congress on October 17, 1968. The celebration of this anniversary will include special ranger programs, a review of Sandburg's writing, and activities to learn more about Carl Sandburg Home and the role of the National Park Service in preserving America's treasures.

December 13
Christmas at Connemara
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The event honors the Sandburg family and features performances of holiday music. Throughout December, Carl Sandburg Home is decorated with poinsettias, pine boughs, and a Christmas tree displaying ornaments replicating those used by the Sandburg family.

Did You Know?
Carl Sandburg collected American folk songs from the time he was 19 years old. He published a book entitled "The American Songbag" from this collection and even learned a few chords on the guitar. He would entertain audiences after poetry recitals with his unique renditions of these songs.
