Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
Park Proposes Fee Change

(FLAT ROCK, NC)—Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is proposing to suspend its acceptance of National Park Passes.  On January 1st, 2007, a new America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass was introduced nationwide, replacing the old National Park Passes.  All previously issued National Park Passes are still valid, but fall under new acceptance rules.  Neither pass waives special use fees, like house tours fees which are charged to tour the Sandburg Home, rather the passes waive entrance fees, which the park does not have.  As a result of this new pass structure, the park proposes to suspend acceptance of NationalParkPasses and National Parks and FederalRecreationalLandsPasses for its house tour fee.  Many of the pass holders visiting the park visit with a Golden Age or SeniorPass, and the park proposes to offer a Senior discount for anyone 62 and older of $3.00 per tour.  The tour fee of $5.00 for adults age 17-61 and free for children age 16 and under will not change.  This is proposed to begin on Sunday, April 22, 2007.  A two-week period of public comment begins Friday, April 6, and closes on Friday, April 20.  Please submit your comments and suggestions to the park by e-mail to carl_administration@nps.gov or by mail to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, 81 Carl Sandburg Lane, Flat Rock, NC 28731.  For more information, please call the park at (828) 693-4178.

House tour fees are a vital part of the park’s funding and are used to hire seasonal Park Guides.  These guides enable the park to offer more daily tours in the busy spring through fall season, operate regular shuttle service in the summer, and provide special interpretive programs, such as cheese-making demonstrations, historic walks, education programs and folk music demonstrations.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is located three miles south of Hendersonville off U.S. 225 on Little River Road.  The park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily, except Christmas Day.  For further information, please telephone 828-693-4178, or visit our website at www.nps.gov/carl.

Carl Sandburg's home in the mid-summer

Did You Know?
Carl Sandburg was not the only notable American to live in this stately home. German born Christopher Memminger(1803-1888), Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate Army from 1861-1864, had this home built in 1838 to escape malaria ridden Charleston, SC summers and 1860's war-torn Charleston.
