(FLAT ROCK, NC)-- The National Park Service has removed the trash can from the top of Big Glassy Mountainat Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock. Big Glassy Mountain, with views to the north, is a popular hiking destination. It was a favorite picnic spot for the Sandburg family during their twenty-two years at Connemara.
The removal of the can reduces the need for park staff to periodically drive up the trail to empty the trash can. This will limit the impact of motorized vehicles on walking trails, and will allow staff time to be redirected toward other more critical park preservation and maintenance projects.
We ask for visitors’ cooperation by not littering in your national park. Visitors can simply carry refuse back to their vehicle. Having clean parks enhances the experience for all visitors.
We encourage visitors to arrive at the park prepared to handle their own garbage. We especially ask that visitors with pets clean up and carry away the waste from their pet. By taking personal responsibility for their pet, visitors ensure a healthier park visit for others and a cleaner, unpolluted park for the plants and wildlife that call Connemara home.
