Detour at Visitor Entrance
The restroom facility, bridge and picnic area at the park entrance will be closed from June 19 - 21 for a roofing project. Visitors will need to walk around the front lake, .4 miles, to access the Sandburg Home and second restroom.
ParKids! Summer Camp Education Program
Flat Rock Playhouse Summer Performances NPS Photo Bring your summer camp or youth group to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site for a day of educational fun and learning. ParKids! is a new onsite summer program geared to engage summer camps and youth groups in a variety of ranger-led and self guided programming. Make sure your campers become ParKids! this summer. Activities include live performances by the Flat Rock Playhouse Vagabond School of Drama, ranger-led house tours, barn tours, poetry activities, and ParKids! Sandburg stage performances. Self-guided Discovery Backpacks are also available to borrow. Discovery Backpacks are filled with interactive activities including scavenger hunts, sensory activities and sketching activities, as well as hands-on tools such as magnifying glasses, binoculars, and field guides. Carl Sandburg's eyes were very sensitive to light. He needed to protect his eyes whenever he worked outside and whenever he worked in rooms with incandescent lighting. He protected his eyes by wearing these green visors.
