NPS Local Natchitoches students assist the University of Houston in archeological field work at Magnolia Plantation. Black History Month, February 2009 Dr. Ken Brown, University of Houston professor and lead archeologist at the summer field school at Magnolia Plantation, has produced the fourth in a series of formal reports of recent findings. NPS Art Along the Bricks coloring activity. Art Along the Bricks, March 28, 2009 The City of Natchitoches will host "Art Along the Bricks" on Front Street in Natchitoches. Park Rangers will be present with coloring books and crayons to introduce kids to the shapes and colors of Creole architecture.
NPS Park Rangers will work with local students to teach the historic and technical aspects of baseball. Creole Baseball Day, April 3, 2009 Magnolia Plantation will be the playing field for a recreation of this great American game. Park Rangers will work with local schools to teach students the how this area's early residents gathered to play.
NPS Junior Ranger patch Junior Ranger Day, April 25, 2009 Families are invited to Oakland Plantation for special youth-centered tours. Upon completion of the official Junior Ranger book, children will earn certificates, patches, and Junior Ranger badges.
NPS Young archeologists sift for artifacts. Archeology Camp, June 15-19, 2009 Local youth will have the opportunity of participating in a real-life archeological excavation at the Magnolia Plantation quarters. University of Houston archeologists and National Park Service rangers will provide training and supervision. NPS Park volunteers learn about the historic town of Natchitoches at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Day. Volunteer Appreciation Day, June 24, 2009 Park volunteers who have shared their talents, time, and energy with the park will be offered free historic tours of downtown Natchitoches, via horse-drawn carriage.
NPS Oakland and Magnolia Plantations offer visitors space to reflect on the cultural and agricultural systems that helped create our great country. National Park Service Founders' Day, August 25, 2009 Celebrate the birthday of our country's National Park system by sharing the release of the new Ken Burns film. Beginning on August 25th, visitors to Oakland Plantation will be given complimentary coupons for popcorn and soda for the September showing of the film.
NPS Youth working in the garden National Public Lands Day, September 26, 2009 Visitors will be given the opportunity to learn about historic crops such as cotton, indigo, and tobacco at this hands-on event.
NPS Visitors tour Oakland Plantation. Fall Pilgrimage, October 10-11, 2009 Descendents of families from the various homes of Oakland Plantation, including the Overseer's House, Slave/Tenant Quarters, and Main House share their memories with park visitors. NPS Rangers share Christmas cheer with park visitors. Natchitoches Junior Christmas Parade, December 5, 2009 Share Christmas with the park staff at the Junior Christmas Parade in Natchitoches. The park's Junior Ranger program will be highlighted. Christmas Downriver, December 12, 2009 Join us at Oakland Plantation for a festive sing-along.
