Cane River National Heritage Area is offering grants of up to $350 to offset the costs of field trips to the park and all Heritage Area sites. If you are interested in obtaining a grant, contact the Cane River National Heritage Area office at 318 356-5555.

Cane River Creole National Historical park strives to connect students to our resource, while reinforcing the curriculum that they are taught at home or in the classroom.

Regardless of your group size or time constraints, we will do our best to provide a meaningful educational experience.

 

"Daily Life of a Sharecropper"

This curriculum based program allows students to experience the day-to-day activities of a sharecropper. Students will participate in a simulated cotton picking activity, learn field songs, and shop at the plantation store.

This program can last between 1-2 hours, depending on your time constraints, and is limited to groups of 25 students.

The activities in this program allign with Louisiana standards of learning for grades 3-6.

Guided Tours of the Oakland Main House

Guided house tours are limited to 15 people at a time, and last approximately 15-20 minutes.

A guided house tour can be included in a Guided Plantation Tour and the "Daily Life of a Sharecropper" program.

*Reservations are required for the main house.

 

Self Guided Plantaion Tours

School groups of any size are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the Oakland and Magnolia plantation sites. Maps and brochures will be provided. Both sites offer accessible trails.

*Self-guided tours do not require a reservation.

 

Guided Plantation Tours

We offer ranger guided tours of the Oakland and Magnolia Plantation sites. These tours can last between 1-2 hours.

Both sites contain numerous original structures that will allow students to gain a greater understanding of the innerworkings of a cotton plantation.

*Reservations are required for this program.

 

Traveling Trunks

Teachers, traveling trunks are available featuring "Cane River Creole Culture" and "Life During the Civil War."

"Cane River Creole Culture" developed for Louisiana 7th Grade Social Studies' GLE's -Unit 4 and 8th Grade Social Studies GLE's - Unit 1.

"Life During the Civil War"- developed for Louisiana 7th Grade U.S. History Unit 6 The Civil War (GLE's) and 8th Grade Louisiana History Unit 7 Civil War and Reconstruction (GLE's).
