Canaveral National Seashore most extensive resource management program involves Sea Turtles nest protection. The park documents 3,000 to 4,000 Sea Turtle nest each year. In the early 1980's, over 95 percent were destroyed by raccoons. In 1984, the park began a nest screening program, where flat 4 feet x 4 feet wire mesh screens were placed over the nests to deter raccoons from reaching the eggs. By utilizing volunteers and seasonal employees working at night, the park has reduced depredation to less than 15 percent. On summer the rangers lead a program at night to watch the turtles in their process of nesting and covers their nest, for more information about the volunteers or how to participate in the rangers program, call (407) 267-1110.
