  • ORV Plan Comment Period Extended

    On May 23, 2014, the NPS released a Environmental Impact Statement for its Off-Road Vehicle Management Plan for a 60-day comment period, which was extended to September 4. The comment period will be extend an additional 15 days until September 19, 2014.

Second Saturday Family and Scout Events

The Harkers Island Visitor Center will be open 7 days per week starting February 15, 2014. Weekend Ranger programs and events at the Harkers Island Visitor Center are scheduled to resume in March.


Join Rangers at the Harkers Island Visitor Center for an exploration of the nature and history of Cape Lookout and learn some of the fun things families can do in the park. All programs (except Critters of the Night) start at 1:00 PM.

Many of these activities count towards Boy Scout and Girl Scout merit badges and all programs can be credited towards a Scout Ranger certificate or patch.


Saturday, March 8

Coloful Skies: Kites and Butterflies (1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) – Spring skies are filled with colorful kites and spring flowers herald the arrival of summer butterflies. Join us at Shell Point on Harkers Island for an afternoon of kites and butterflies. Build your own kite to fly and learn about the local plants you can use to attract butterflies to your garden.

Sand dollars are living animals. If you find one that is brown and fuzzy, leave it behind. If it is white and smooth it has already died, and you may keep it. Cape Lookout National Seashore
