HARKERS ISLAND, NC ––Have you ever held a sea turtle shell?Ever wanted to try on a ranger hat?Here is your chance!Come help Cape Lookout National Seashore celebrate National Junior Ranger Day and National Park Week on Saturday, April 12, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.All of the activities will take place at the Harkers Island Visitor Center of Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Cape Lookout National Seashore has some special activities planned for National Junior Ranger Day. The program is designed to help children and families connect with parks in ways that engage them in exploring, learning, and practicing stewardship.

The activities are open to visitors of all ages. There is no charge for the programs, and there is no registration necessary for families; youth groups are encouraged to register ahead of time.

Saturday's ongoing activities will include:

Kites – Bring your own or make one here

Seashore Crafts – Incorporate seashore resources into crafts you can take with you

Many Hats of a Ranger – Suit up and imagine being a national park ranger

Discovery Cart – Look closer at some of the natural treasures found on the beaches of Cape Lookout National Seashore

Children can also use this opportunity to receive a Junior Ranger booklet and begin working towards earning their official Junior Ranger Badge and certificate. Families can participate in one of our five Junior Ranger Adventure Programs and explore more of what Cape Lookout National Seashore has to offer.These kits come equipped with all needed supplies to take a closer look at the cultural and natural resource of the park.

The Junior Ranger Program began in the 1960s and was developed to encourage kids and their parents to "Explore, Learn About and Protect" their national parks.Thousands of Park Stewards have been certified as Junior Rangers and with the new participants thousands more will be certified on National Junior Ranger Day throughout the country.
