On the Outer Banks, lighthouses and their keepers provided an invaluable service assisting with navigation through the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." This traveling trunk will teach students about this important aspect of our maritime history. Through journals, hands-on artifacts, and classroom activities, your class can experience some of the daily activities of a lighthouse keeper.

    "Lighthouse Lessons"

Great Resource with a variety of useful resources. Lesson plans are easy to follow. Students enjoy the activities and stay focused & engaged. Target a variety of standards. Trunks are easy to obtain, timely delivered, and have quality instructional materials.

Require adaptation to use at the higher middle grade levels.

I experienced great success, using these in stations, having children work in groups of 4, spending 10-15 minutes on each activity, rotating , using a graphic organizer for accountability and focus. Student feedback was positive, and I enjoyed all the activities, too!!

    "Lighthouse Traveling Trunk"

The lessons and materials in the traveling trunk were not only deeply informative (tracing the types and history of lighthouses from past to present including lighthouses in North America and lighthouses in Europe) but also very engaging for students. Students loved learning about the life of a lighthouse keeper and getting to experience the hands on materials provided in the kit to see what a uniform was like as well as other materials such as games & toys, etc. keepers and their families would have used. Students also enjoyed reading selections from the primary resource journal from an actual lighthouse keeper at Cape Lookout. One of the most powerful lessons was the lesson on measuring the heights of five of the NC lighthouses. It really put in to perspective the grand scale of our coastal lighthouses (many of which my students had never seen in person). I really loved how impressed my students were when they went out to our school track and could see how each lighthouse measured up to each other. It was much more impressive to them doing it this way than any graph or diagram could be.

I do not have any cons. The only cons I have are the fact that you can only keep the trunk for two weeks! I could have spent a month doing lessons with this kit!!!

Overall this is such a wonderful program and such a wonderful trunk. It meets so many learning standards and is cross-curricular. Our school plans on using this kit for years to come!
