Getting Ready for 2016

The National Park Service turns 100 on August 25, 2016. To us, it's not about cakes and candles — it's about being an organization ready to take on the challenges of our second century. The Chukchi Sea is ice-covered from November until May. Ice formation begins in October, with the ice edge from the permanent polar ice pack extending progressively southward until late March. The northward retreat of the ice edge begins in April and continues until late September.
