Superintendent Mike Murray announced today the National Park Service (NPS) will seek public comment on alternative transportation strategies developed for the Bodie Island District at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The NPS has partnered with the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center of the U.S. Department of Transportation to perform an analysis of transportation strategies for visitors traveling to or between developed sites within the Bodie Island District. The analysis has focused on the potential use of transportation services and non-motorized vehicle options, such as shuttle and local bus, water ferry, and routes for bicycling, hiking, and walking, as well as, their necessary services, equipment, facilities, and infrastructure. The study analyzes the movement of visitors within developed areas of Bodie Island especially in the context of increased visitation to the Bodie Island Lighthouse, but does not include transportation of visitors along the beach or to Bodie Island Spit. The study provides planning-level recommendations and estimates to inform future decision-making, but is not a decision document.

Between Wednesday, July 21, 2010 and Thursday, August 19, 2010, the NPS is soliciting input on proposed alternative transportation strategies developed for Bodie Island. A public meeting will be held at the First Flight Centennial Pavilion at Wright Brothers National Memorial on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Interested persons will have the opportunity to review study products developed thus far, which include a Transportation Needs Assessment and Transportation Conditions Inventory, and provide comment on Proposed Transportation Strategies.

NPS encourages commenting electronically through the park's Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/caha. If you wish to submit your written comments in hard copy (e.g. in a letter), you may send them by U.S. Postal Service, other mail delivery service or hand-deliver to: Superintendent, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, 1401 National Park Drive, Manteo, NC 27954. Written comments will also be accepted during the public meeting. To ensure that your comments are included in the process, they must be entered or received by August 19, 2010.
