The National Park Service is currently accepting applications from members of the local communities to volunteer at the Bodie Island Lighthouse and assist with tour operations during the 2014 season.

"Since opening the Bodie Island Lighthouse for public tours last summer, there has been much interest in volunteer opportunities. Taking care of the lighthouse and welcoming visitors was a duty of the lighthouse keepers, many of whom were from our communities. This volunteer program will provide an opportunity for local citizens to continue this caretaking tradition," stated Superintendent Barclay Trimble.

Volunteer duties will include assisting ranger staff with lighthouse tours; taking wind, temperature, and humidity readings; helping visitors exit the lighthouse due to discomfort with heights; and answering visitor questions at the base and balcony of the lighthouse. In addition, just as the lighthouse keepers did historically, some light cleaning duties are needed inside the tower.

Volunteers must be able to climb the lighthouse multiple times per each 4.5-hour shift and commit to at least one shift per week from the beginning of May through Columbus Day in October. There will be a volunteer open house at the lighthouse in late March and a three-day mandatory volunteer training provided the second week of May.

Applications are available online at https://www.nps.gov/caha/supportyourpark/volunteer.htm or by calling 475-9056. Applications must be received by March 20, 2014. There are a limited number of volunteer positions available. Housing/trailer pads are not available.
